What is an Ocean?

An Ocean is a continuous body of saline water that covers over 70% of Earth's surface. It is the planet's largest life-support system, regulating climate and weather.

  • Five Basins: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.
  • The Abyss: Average depth is 3.7 kilometers (12,100 feet).
  • Carbon Sink: Absorbs 30% of human-produced CO₂.
  • Bio-Diversity: Home to 94% of Earth's living species.

Deep Ocean

The Great Unknown. The deep ocean is Earth's largest habitat. It is a high-pressure, low-temperature wilderness that acts as the planet's Carbon Sink and climate regulator.

  • 🌑 Aphotic Reality: Where light cannot penetrate.
  • 🌑 Hydrothermal Vents: Life fueled by chemicals, not sun.
  • 🌑 Gigantism: Where small species evolve into giants.

The Depth Formula

Ocean depth is calculated using Echo Sounding. By measuring how long it takes for a sound pulse to hit the floor and return, we can find the exact distance.

Formula: d = v × t / 2

  • d = Depth of the ocean
  • v = Speed of sound in water (~1,500 m/s)
  • t = Total "Round Trip" time

*We divide by 2 because the sound travels down and back up.

Challenger Deep

The Hadal Limit. Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in Earth's hydrosphere. It is a world of Extreme Extremes, where life exists under pressures that would crush titanium.

  • 🌌 Perpetual Darkness: Zero sunlight penetration.
  • 🌌 Tectonic Trench: Formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate.
  • 🌌 Xenophyophores: Home to giant single-celled life.

Crushing Pressure

Pressure in the ocean is Hydrostatic. Because water is nearly incompressible, its weight stacks up quickly as you go deeper.

At the surface, pressure is 1 ATM.
At 10,000 meters, it is over 1,000 ATM.

That's about 15,000 pounds per square inch (PSI).
