THE GIRAFFE

WILDERNESS ORIGIN:

The Giraffe

Camelopardalis is a large but faint constellation in the northern sky. Its name comes from the Greek words for "camel" and "leopard" because of its spotted coat and long neck.

πŸ¦’

1612 | PETRUS PLANCIUS

The Dutch astronomer created this constellation to fill a "dark" void between Ursa Major and Cassiopeia. He named it after the giraffe mentioned in the Bible.

CAMEL-LEOPARD

The name comes from the Greek 'kamΓ©los' (camel) and 'pΓ‘rdalis' (leopard), because giraffes have long necks like camels and spots like leopards.

THE FAINT GIANT

Though it is the 18th largest constellation, it is famous for having no stars brighter than 4th magnitude, making it a challenge for even experienced stargazers.

"Did you know? Camelopardalis contains 'Kemble's Cascade,' a beautiful straight line of about 20 stars that looks like a waterfall through binoculars!"

NGC 2403

A magnificent intermediate spiral galaxy. It is an "outlying" member of the M81 group and was the first galaxy outside the Local Group to have a Cepheid variable discovered.
