CELESTIAL WATCHER:

The Herdsman

Boötes is often seen as a kite-shaped figure chasing the Great Bear (Ursa Major) around the pole. It represents a plowman or a hunter.

Legacy of the Herdsman 📜

🏹

ANCIENT GREECE | THE PLOWMAN

Boötes is often called the "Bear Driver" because he chases Ursa Major across the sky. He was said to have invented the plow to help mankind farm the earth.

ARCTURUS | THE GUARDIAN

The name Arcturus means "Guardian of the Bear." This orange giant is so bright that its light was once used to trigger the opening of the 1933 World's Fair!

THE KITE | SHAPE

While the Greeks saw a man, modern stargazers recognize the constellation by its giant "Kite" or "Ice Cream Cone" shape extending from the Big Dipper.

"Did you know? Arcturus is moving remarkably fast—it will eventually move so far that it will no longer be part of the Boötes constellation!"
